Briskwalking and its many Benefits.

Hey there!

How have you been? How is it going at your end?

I am good! Still on the search for a suitable place for my business. The search has had its ups and downs but let me focus on something else today. Something that does not exasperate me like the search for a place has.๐Ÿ˜…

I have over the years tried running, aerobics and indoor exercises on and off. I have really not been able to stay the course for a number of reasons. However, in 2018, I bought a book written by a medical doctor who believes in natural therapies and healing. I cannot quite remember his name but the book was titled ” Spontaneous Healing”.

Reading that book changed my mind about exercise and the natural approaches to healing, health and the human mind and body. For instance,it was in this book that i realized that I do not necessarily need to work out 2 long hours everyday to stay healthy.

It was from this book I made up my mind to start walking at least 3 times a week for 45minutes to 1hour. I started doing this consistently early last year (2020) and even through the lockdown as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

During Oba’s pregnancy, I had coccyx pain from the 5th month of the pregnancy. It was so bad that I complained about it during every antenatal visit, but they said there was nothing they could do about it as my child was resting on a nerve or was it muscle connected to my coccyx.
They did give me pain relief which only numbed the pain for a few hours ,so I stopped taking it.

The pain got worse after delivery through CS and the spinal anaesthesia. I suffered this pain so much that I could not bend to touch my toes without pain shooting up my back and it got worse during my monthly periods.

I continued to endure this pain. Sometimes it will be so debilitating that I would be frozen in a position for a few minutes before I could move. Briskwalking took care of this pain that I have suffered for years. I have not had coccyx pain since last year, amazing, yes?

Also,my weight has stayed fairly consistent since I started briskwalking. I don’t overstretch myself too much with exercise anymore. I just briskwalk 3 to 5 times a week and I am good.
Most of the time,I do 3 or 4 times a week for about 60 to 90minutes in the evenings.

I also used to have pain in my left knee. Especially when I sew manually. The pain has been ongoing for some years now but briskwalking has made it so much better. I still cannot do squats because it triggers my knee pain, however, as long as I am briskwalking,I don’t feel the pain. I have noticed though that while I was in Lagos on training, the knee pain started because I didn’t briskwalk for a whole month.

Also,I can walk for 2 hours straight without panting or being short of breath. Mike walked with me throughout last year and taught me to breath from deep in my belly as opposed to breathing without doing it deeply. This has helped me with breath control when I briskwalk. My breathing is always even and there is no struggle whatsoever.

It was in that book I learnt that breathing this way strengthens the muscles of your heart as opposed to taking shallow breaths. So I make a conscious effort to pause sometimes to take full, deep breaths from deep in my tummy.

I also used to have malaria quite often, say at least once in 2 to 3months. Since I started briskwalking, I have only been ill once (in January this year). I really do not know the connection of this but this is what I have noticed so perhaps it has also strengthened my immune system.

All in all,I can categorically say that taking up briskwalking has improved my life and overall health as well as had a huge impact on the quality of my health and I actually really do enjoy brsikwalking as it also clears my head and lets me think and also sleep much better.

What exercise have you taken up or want to take up but have not for any reason?
I think briskwalking is a fun way to stay fit and healthy and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to take up some form of exercise.

However, like in everything that has to do with your health, always consult your doctor before you embark on any strenuous exercise.

Remember, health is wealth and the best thing you can do for yourself is to take care of your body. That is the only place you have to live in. Be good to yourself!
