My Hair Care Routine

My hair

Hey there!

How have you been? The year 2020 has been a year like no other. If you are like me,you probably came into 2020 with a lot of plans and high hopes. The year has however not gone according to anybody’s plans.

I refuse to dwell on what could have been or what I ended up not getting or being able to do. It will only make me unhappy and unsettled.

When I am anxious or worried about anything, apart from praying, there are a few things I do but top on my list would be washing my hair.😁 Odd? But it is true, washing my hair always makes me feel better no matter how bad or anxious I feel about anything.

Speaking about my hair. I have had quite a number of people send me a private message on facebook to ask about my hair care routine and products. I feel compelled to put it out here so that I do not have to keep repeating it.😊

My locks are now all of ten years. I remember like yesterday when I had my locs started from scratch. I decided on locks actually as a compromise between Mike and I.

When we first met,I wore low cut hair and sometimes some type of ‘koko balls’ ,I love wearing low cut. The freedom is unrivalled.😁 Some years into the relationship,I started growing out my hair and I mostly wore Ghana braids or corn rows. He loved my hair.

Years down the line, shortly before we got married. I got tired and wanted to return to low cut. Mike kept saying he did not think it was a good idea,I left the idea for a while, after marriage, while pregnant with our first child. I chopped off most of my relaxed hair and had some sort of afro going on.

I could not manage it,locs was our compromise,I had wanted locs on and off largely because my hair is really kinky and rubbery and not the easiest to manage. Since Mike always turned up his nose at my going back to low cut. I told him he had to pick one of the two.

Locs it was and here I am 10 years down the line. My hair care is really not so difficult. I relock my hair 4 times a year using the interlocking method. I do this every 3 months. I recently started steaming once or twice a year(I should improve on this).

I do not use any wax or gel on my hair. I have not used them for over 5 years now. I only lock my hair with oils. I do different combinations of oils depending on what oil I am currently in love withπŸ˜ƒRight now,it is Argan,Jojoba and tea tree combo. Before that,it was coconut, castor and tea tree.

My locs are quite long now,I have always washed every 10 to 14days but because I briskwalk at least 3 to 5times a week now and I sweat alot. I sometimes wash once or even twice a week. I hate smelly hair!

I wash with liquid black soap that I prepare by myself. I used to put in aloe vera gel and lemon but I think it is colouring my hair some shade of brown,my hair has never been black but it is now a far lighter shade of brown especially at the tips.

I wash with nearly hot water if I want a thorough wash but if I it is not really dirty and I am just washing to get rid of sweat,I use warm water. The hair is much longer than I can handle washing by myself now so I mostly get Mike to wash it or I go to this saloon where I really like how they wash my hair.

When I steam I use mashed or blended avocados mixed with argan oil or coconut oil. I pit in a drop of tea tree oil or peppermint oil. I recently got hold of grade A black seed oil and trying to get unroasted palm kernel oil. I am still reading and exploring on those. I have not used them though.

I am very laid back with my hair,it is mostly always in a ponytail or just swept up in a bun off my nape and face. I have really tender scalp and constantly manipulating my locks into different styles is not my idea of fun and the only time I let it down is on hair wash day.πŸ™Š

The best thing about my hair is how it smells when I wash and oil it using my oil combo. I just spread it out and sniff at itπŸ˜ƒ. I think this is about everything in my hair care. I hope this helps someone on their locs journey.

Locs are beautiful, however they also require love and care. What you eat also shows on your hair. No two head of hairs are the same. All you need do is care for your hair, enjoy the journey and be happy while at it.

Love.
Yetunde.😘
